The problem with vanity metrics

Agencies love to tout big numbers: impressions, pageviews, clicks. But those numbers don’t mean anything if your lead count isn’t growing. A million impressions with zero new customers is not a win, it’s a warning.

The problem often starts with setting the wrong goal. If your agency is focused on “growing traffic” instead of generating leads, you’re likely getting the wrong kind of traffic—visitors who aren’t interested in buying.

What you should be tracking instead

Conversion-focused SEO requires the right analytics in place. You need full visibility into:

  • Where your traffic is coming from (ads, search, social)
  • How visitors are moving through your site
  • Which pages convert—and which don’t
  • Multi-step funnels and drop-off points

If you don’t have that kind of tracking in place, you can’t optimize for conversions. Even worse, you might not even own your data. If your agency controls your GA4, Google Ads, or CRM setup, you’re at risk of losing everything if you part ways.

How to turn traffic into leads

Start by auditing your content. Identify which pages bring in the most traffic, and which bring in the least number of leads. Focus on eliminating or rewriting content that doesn’t serve your business goals.

Then, double down on high-intent topics:

  • Comparison articles (“X vs. Y”)
  • Buying guides
  • Local service terms (“best plumber near me”)

It’s okay if your overall traffic drops. What matters is that more of it turns into leads.

SEO traffic doesn’t matter if it doesn’t convert

By focusing on quality over quantity, setting the right goals, and owning your data, you can turn your SEO into a true growth engine. It’s not about how many people see your site; it’s about how many of them take action.
